Nacho
Martinez, my husband and the namesake of the tournament, died 12 years ago - October
28, 2012 - after a valiant fight against Prostate Cancer. He was 55 years old.
Nacho
was born in Tijuana, Baja Mexico, the youngest of five children, but he grew up
in the United States. We were married in 1986 and quickly had five children of
our own. They all attended St. Charles School, and we became immersed in school
and parish life. We both felt very fortunate that our children were able to
attend St. Charles. One of the most meaningful things for Nacho to do was
donate to their Tuition Assistance Fund each year.
Nacho loved to play
golf. He forgot everything else when he was on the course and he played as
often as he could. He loved his friends and the time he spent at Balboa Golf
Course. He brought his usual brand of good cheer with him to the course and would
get especially ‘festive’ at the monthly meetings. He liked to keep things
lively, so when the 50/50 raffle ticket was about to be selected, Nacho would
yell from the back of the room, “Shake em up!”
So
in keeping with Nacho’s philosophy, please enjoy this day: the sunshine, the
camaraderie, the beer (if you are old enough!) and oh yes, THE GOLF!
God
bless you for giving to such a worthy cause, a cause that was very close to my
husband’s heart and will remain forever close to mine!
So
go out there, have a great time, and don’t be afraid to “Shake ‘em up!”
